Job description
Student and Enrolment Services is currently seeking a Full-time Temporary Relief Director, Marketing & Communications.

Reporting directly to the Vice-Provost (Student Experience) and through a dotted line to the Associate Vice-President (Marketing), the Director, Marketing & Communications for Student and Enrolment Services (SES) works in close collaboration with the Provost's office as well as the University Relations division.

The overarching mission of Student and Enrolment Services is to provide comprehensive support for students from their first point of contact with the University of Calgary through to graduation. The Director, Marketing & Communications is part of the planning process for SES and is responsible for providing vision and leadership for all internal and external SES marketing and communications through a comprehensive strategic plan. The incumbent will develop and execute against marketing and communication strategies that are informed by market research; and develop differentiated strategies and positioning for various target markets and audiences.


The scope of this role is university-wide, and so the incumbent will work closely and collaborate with senior-level SES Associate Vice-Provosts and Directors, as well as the AVP Marketing in University Relations, to lead the creation and execution of the SES marketing and communications strategy, ensuring that it reflects the overall university positioning, objectives, and brand standards.
Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):
The Director, Marketing & Communications is expected to develop and set direction for an effective and student-focused marketing and communications strategy in consultation with the Vice-Provost (Student Experience), SES Associate Vice-Provosts, SES Directors, University Relations, and other stakeholders
The Director has overall responsibility for all SES marketing and communications and ensures the success of marketing and communications initiatives within SES
Consult with staff and students regularly to assess the effectiveness of SES marketing and communication initiatives
Direct the development and writing of quality and timely marketing and communications materials, both print and online
Develop, implement and update marketing and communications strategies, both internally and externally and ensures strategies are unrolled to SES senior leadership in a timely fashion
Develop good working relationships with stakeholders on and off campus
Provide long-term and short-term marketing and communications advice to senior administrators in SES, including protocol and media advice
Provide marketing and communications consultation and direction to SES departments
Conduct regular review of all SES websites and print publications to ensure all content is up-to-date, relevant and timely
Ensure that available funding is used effectively to achieve goals by careful monitoring of expenditures related to marketing and communications
Work collaboratively with the University Relations division
Work with the Vice-Provost, Registrar, Associate Registrars, Directors, Managers and others to oversee production, design, printing, and delivery of all SES publications
Select and work with contractors and agencies as necessary to ensure that SES marketing and communications projects are well implemented
Supervise a team of five full-time professionals (two Communications Advisors, a Web and Communications Specialist, Web Developer and Graphic Designer. This includes the supervision of temporary part-time staff during peak periods
Oversee SES marketing and communications needs
Develop SES internal communications strategies, tools and tactics while acting as the communications lead for all enrolment services, student services, and wellness communication initiatives targeted at the student body and potential student compliment

Desired Skills and Experience
Qualifications / Requirements:
A University degree in communications or marketing or a related university degree
Additional training in the field of public relations, marketing, and/or communications, and a minimum of 5-8 years of direct supervisory experience in the marketing and communications field; preferably in an academic setting
Candidates with an equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered
Demonstrated excellence in marketing strategy, writing, editing, creative ideation, web content development and project management
Experience in producing a variety of marketing and communications tools aimed at various internal and external audiences
Communications experience in a large complex organization; knowledge of post-secondary educational issues; market research experience; media relations experience; community liaison experience; ability to work with staff at all levels; team management skills; ability to work under pressure and deadlines; and an ability to handle numerous priorities at once
Ability to work collaboratively with others on campus and also to work with design, communications, and printing departments, both on and off campus, is essential
